Description of NIVaM
The National Institute of Education and Youth (hereinafter referred to as “NIVaM”) was established in 2022 through the merging of several departmental organisations and is now a national leader in expertise on education and training issues – it is a research, curricular, professional, methodological, advisory, and educational institution.
As a public, departmental organisation, NIVaM fulfils the vision of modern formal and non-formal education in Slovakia by expert support of its actors to be able to provide quality education and training services. NIVaM cooperates with other partners who provide educational services to children, pupils, youth, and adults.

Key functions

  • Creation, innovation, monitoring and evaluation of educational documents (curricula, guidelines, support materials, etc.);
  • Creation and coordination of national and international tests and measurements;
  • Development of school curriculum;
  • Research in the field of education and youth work;
  • Advice and support to educational organisations, schools and educational facilities in the implementation of curricular changes in pedagogical practice;
  • Assessment and evaluation of educational publications;
  • Training of pedagogical and professional staff, professional development consultancy ;
  • Training of youth workers, support and development of youth work;
  • Activities of the National Agency Erasmus+ for Youth and Sport and the European Solidarity Corps;
  • Provision and access to library and information services;
  • Other tasks according to current needs in the field of education.

Education sectors covered
Pre-primary, primary, lower and upper secondary education, professional development (lifelong learning) and youth work.

  • To fulfil the objectives of the curricular reform;
  • Actively support and develop the training of teaching and professional staff;
  • Build an effective system to support inclusion;
  • Support the development of youth policy.
