CIDREE Assessment for Learning Conference, Tartu/Estonia, October 25th 2013
The CIDREE Assessment for Learning (AfL) project conference in Estonia was connected with the national conference on teachers’ professional development on 24th October. More than 200 Estonian teachers, school principals and educational developers enjoyed informative presentations about assessment for learning on the examples of Scotland and Slovenia. Also a workshop on different aspects of AfL was run by the four experts from the two CIDREE member organizations Education Scotland and Zavod Republike Slovenije za šolstvo.
The CIDREE project conference was held with the group of people involved in the activities of the project – researchers, teachers and other stakeholders. Topics for presentations and discussions were put as follows:
- How should teacher initial training help in spreading principles of AfL over the schools and the country?
- Supporting teachers for effective assessment for learning.
- Teachers’ self-reflection and peer feedback in their action research of using AfL.
- Engaging students in the processes of assessment.
- Controversy and harmony between national education policy and school/class assessment.

CIDREE Study Visit to Glasgow, June 18th – 21st 2013
Assessment in Scottish Education
The Study Visit started with a broad, in depth information session. Assessment in Scottish education has been thoroughly revised in relationship to the Curriculum for Excellence. The idea that learning, teaching and assessing should and can go together in an holistic approach was rather new for most of the participants. Thanks to the limited number of participants it was possible to ask for specific information and even have a discussion.
However, since the proof of the pudding (or the haggis) is in the eating, it was during the school visits that became clear how such an innovative approach can work in everyday (school)life. We saw participating and motivated pupils under the guidance of their patient and friendly teachers. Subjects and materials were interesting and challenging. Even the walls of the classrooms and corridors had a didactic function as support of learning and motivation.
The Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy was the main subject of the Thursday morning session. It was the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about why and how such large scale surveys can be undertaken.
In conclusion I can confirm that all participants worked very well on their level and achieved the learning intentions and success criteria.
A perfect organization and stimulating atmosphere in the group made this study visit a success.

European Study Visit: Improving teachers professional development, Lyon, 2013
A European challenge. Development, design and study of video-training tools
The study visit was hosted by the French Institute of Education, ENS de Lyon. It was conceived as a first milestone for multilateral cooperation on video-training within CIDREE and was held from March 26-28th, 2013. It was organized by the Centre Alain Savary.
Participants: University of Tartu (Estonia), Education Scotland, UK (University of Glasgow), National Education Institute (Slovenia), University of Valencia (Spain), Haute Ecole Libre Mosane (Belgium), University of Geneva (Switzerland).
Goals of the study visit:
- Identify and evaluate common and local concerns of European experts
- Share IFE’s expertise in resources’ engineering (NéoPass@ction platform)
- Contribute to designing and promoting efficient and innovative video-training tools
- Favour international scientific collaborations on the analysis of the activity,
the training of teachers and the training of teachers’ trainers.
First milestones for cooperation in video-training for teachers
European researchers and training-device designers from 8 European countries shared their knowledge and practices about teachers’ video-training in order to reply to a growing demand in innovative tools designed for teacher training.
The study visit took place at the same time as the trainers' training "NéoPass@ction”, which is a video-training tool based on the analysis of real work activity. The advantage of taking part to it was to enable the participants to exchange with the Scientific Steering Committee and to benefit from trainer’s feedbacks.
As a result of a 3-day study visit, presenting the participants’ involvement in video-training, the IFÉ’s Neopass@ction model, participating to the related national trainers' training session, and taking stock of the scientific exchanges on research and practices regarding teachers' video-training issues, a number of collaborative opportunities came about during the final meeting of the study visit.
Main fields: research and design of resources, setting up a European network of experts in video-training for teachers.
Outcomes : prospective follow-up actions
1. Training design events
Training design events can be considered as milestones of a living network, permitting its members to share regularly new concerns, obstacles, practices, findings concerning their own projects, in order to improve collectively the European awareness concerning video- training issues and devices.
- Seminars (research and design communications, workshops): at least once a year
- Study visits (observatory, research and design communications, workshops)
2. Scientific events
Scientific events can be organized to help European researchers sharing knowledge about the way teachers (especially beginners) are professionally developing, the way they learn from observing their own activity or one another’s activity, the way trainers manage to integrate efficiently video resources in their training session, the way video-training impacts the development of professional communities. 3. Common resources and studies
Putting the research field on an international scale could initiate comparative research on school culture and teaching methods of intervention using video corpuses and mixed models for analysing work and training activity. Moreover, it could also be an opportunity for English speaking countries to benefit from IFÉ’s NeoPass@ction platform, or to create common international resources around a specific topic.
- Identifying an interesting common teaching topic and investigating it through several cultural teaching contexts
- Translating and subtitling NeoPass@ction platform into English
- Adding foreign corpuses on Neopass@ction platform
4. Design support and mentoring
Several structural obstacles can preclude some colleagues in creating video resources for teachers’ training, that can be overcome by different ways thanks to IFÉ’s and other colleagues’ previous work.
- Providing Neopass@ction’s architecture without the French resources
- Providing technical work on post-producing and articulate video resources
- Sharing IFÉ’s methodological expertise by regular correspondence

CIDREE Conference: Effective Assessment For Learning, Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2012
From June 21 to 22 the CIDREE Conference «Effective Assessment for Learning» took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It was hosted by The National Education Institute of Slovenia with the support of Education Scotland. There were nine representatives of seven European countries who are members of CIDREE and three guests from Bosnia and Herzegovina. There were also 27 Slovenian experts who actively participated throughout the conference.
The aim of the conference was to help countries seeking to change their assessment policies and practices by identifying effective, evidence-based methodologies that they can adapt and implement to improve their current arrangements and improve learners’ achievements.

Two keynotes from Scotland and Slovenia were addressing on one hand common understanding of assessment and on the other, how to make change work. The conference was organised as a series of presentations on key issues followed by parallel discussions which tried to answer three questions:
- What are the advantages, benefits, best features of presented practices?
- What are the potential difficulties in different countries/environments to adopt such an approach?
- What are the solutions – 3 to 5 good ways of solving it?

Rapporteurs presented the outcomes of fruitful discussions which served as an introduction into identifying areas of potential change. Participating countries have agreed to continue working upon four issues, namely:
- Promoting professional learning
- Linking research and teacher discussion
- Moderation and
- AfL Tools.
In each area one country will serve as a source country that will support the coordinator to liaise with others in their groups and to decide on focus and the progress each country intends to make by the help of Action Research Log. The developments within individual areas of interest will also trigger the next step of the project, which will be connected to November General Assembly in Stockholm, Sweden.
Evaluation of the conference proved that it was an excellent start for CIDREE project on Assessment for learning. Particularly appreciated was the degree to which delegates could contribute, the communication preceding the conference, the added value for CIDREE and the degree to which delegates were planning to follow the conference up within their institution.

Curriculum Provision for Exceptionally Able Students
This report is the product of a collaborative project that explored a range of practices and projects which address the learning needs of students with exceptional ability. Exceptionally able students require greater extension in breadth and depth of learning activities than is normally provided for the main cohort of students.
The participants in the project; the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA), Ireland, Schweizerische Koordinationsstelle für Bildungsforschung (SKBF/CSRE), Switzerland, and Instituut voor Leerplan-Ontwikkeling (SLO), the Netherlands, set out to bring together some of the experiences of schools and teachers in their respective countries in providing curriculum provision for students with exceptional ability. The report captures these experiences in a range of case studies which describe in rich detail projects and practices at national, regional, school and classroom levels.
