Key Remit: We are responsible for education and skills in Wales. We are working to raise the standards of education and training provision, attainment and infrastructure across Wales so that everyone can reach their potential; delivering a suitably skilled workforce with high-quality opportunities for all learners; supporting individuals, families, communities and businesses in improving economic and social well-being and reduce inequality through education and training. Working with key partners, including Regional Education Consortia, Estyn, Qualifications Wales: and engaging with post-16 providers including vocational providers.

Educational Sectors Covered: Pre-school, Primary, Secondary and Special

Current Educational Priorities/Projects:

Four key enabling objectives in delivering our new transformational curriculum: Develop a high-quality education profession; Inspirational leaders working collaboratively to raise standards; Strong and inclusive schools committed to excellence, equity and well-being; and Robust assessment, evaluation and accountability arrangements supporting a self-improving system.

Current Organisational Priorities:

  • Bring further coherence across the various reform initiatives;
  • Continue the process of co-constructing policies with key stakeholders, making explicit how teachers, support staff, school leaders, local authorities, regional consortia and other stakeholders each contribute to realising the vision for the Welsh Learner;
  • Continue strengthening of Wales’ school improvement infrastructure through strengthening the capacity of regional consortia and the quality of their relationships with teacher education institutions;
  • Further enhance the use of evidence and research and its link to policy through continuing to invest in building research and assessment capacity at all levels of the system; and
  • Communicate clearly about the Welsh education reform journey, including ensuring that we celebrate the successes.
